The Future of Electrification Lies with Efficient and Reliable High Voltage Power Supply Systems

Learn more on the switch to 800v power supply systems and powertrains, and the need for efficiency and reliability.

“For both the consumer and manufacturer, the switch to 800V architecture presents a compelling value proposition. By adopting an 800V platform with lower current demands, and equipped with silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, an EV with a 50kWh battery, delivering a range of 200 miles can achieve a 10 percent improvement in efficiency. This could reduce energy consumption to ~4.4 miles per kWh, resulting in a potential battery capacity reduction of between 4 to 5kWh. At today’s average prices, this could save between $500 and $600 on the battery pack alone.”

“SiC technology offers reduced switching and conduction losses that improves efficiency – sometimes by as much as 50 percent compared with silicon – and potentially increase range. A 210kW inverter using 1,200V SiC MOSFETs, in the place of insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), plus freewheeling diodes of the same voltage rating and running at 10kHz can achieve an efficiency approaching 99 percent under moderate loads.”
