The Strategy to Repurpose EV Battery Modules as a Valuable Input for Mechanical and Software Development for the EV Fleet

Get your copy of our featured article by Ekaterina Sergeeva, Charging System Product Lead at ARRIVAL, a company that designs and produces zero-emission vehicles. With a PhD in her field, Ekaterina is an expert in advanced battery management system (BMS) algorithms design and functional safety (FuSa) concept development for various electric vehicle (EV) architectures.

Throughout her career, Ekaterina has worked her way up from a BMS algorithms developer to managing the entire BMS development V-cycle. She is passionate about developing innovative solutions in the automotive industry to push the boundaries of what is traditionally accepted as possible.

Ekaterina will be presenting at the Automotive Battery Technologies 2023 conference in Berlin, Germany, from October 24th to 26th.

This article discusses the strategy of repurposing electric vehicle (EV) battery modules as a valuable input for mechanical and software development for the EV fleet. Since battery packs are one of the most expensive components in electric vehicles, there is a heavy focus in the industry on the approaches that can be taken to reduce the price in the long term. Some forecasts predict a shortage of resources by 2030, which could lead to even higher cell prices. The idea of recycling aged battery modules could provide an alternative approach to reducing costs. These modules can be recovered and returned to the first stage of cell and module production.

Ekaterina’s article explores the challenges associated with unifying recycling systems for different chemistry of cells and suggests that repurposing aged battery modules for stationary applications such as energy storage systems could bring value in several ways. The repurposing concept can provide better returns on investment for EV fleet companies, reduce the need for new battery production for energy storage systems, reduce initial investments, and cut down landfill waste.

The article also discusses the requirements that repurposed or reused battery modules need to meet for certification, particularly for stationary applications.
