The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement activity. The NHTSA's does this by creating mandatory requirements and investigating possible safety defects.

At 2014's international conference on ISO 26262 and Functional Safety, NHTSA's Division Chief, Electronic Systems Safety Research, Cem Hatipoglu gave this presentation on the topic of Electronics Reliability & Functional Safety Research.
