1:20 PM OPTIMIZATION AND COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ELECTRIC MACHINE TOPOLOGIES WITH VARYING MAGNETIC MATERIALS: STANDARD STEEL LAMINATIONS VS. SOFT MAGNETIC COMPOSITES

  • In the modern era, electrical machines are widely produced using electrical steel laminations. Recent advancements in soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials have significantly improved their application in these machines. SMC's isotropic magnetic properties support complex structures for magnetic flux and reduce losses. Its uniform heat dissipation in all directions further enhances thermal performance. Therefore, SMC plays a crucial role in driving the development of innovative electrical machine designs.
  • This research compares the use of traditional laminate steel material and SMC for various electric machine types with radial magnetic flux, intended to be used for traction of hybrid and electric vehicles. The study covers rare earth interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPM), wound field synchronous machine (WFSM), spoke ferrite rare-earth free permanent magnet synchronous machine (SP-FER), and induction (asynchronous) machine (IM).
  • Performance of 32 electric machine variants (considering different materials) is compared against the reference IPM topology. NO20-1200H laminated steel drives the initial optimization, post-optimization analysis extends to various grades of laminated steel and soft magnetic composite (SMC) materials, with the latter used exclusively in stators due to mechanical stress considerations.
