Despite predictions that Covid-19 would slow down the uptake of the electric vehicles, the opposite seems to have transpired.

  • In January 2021, 14% of European vehicle sales were plug-in vehicle sales and 5.6% were fully electric
  • EV registrations in the U.S. in 2020 reached record market share of 1.8%, demonstrating increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles
  • Global electric vehicle charging infrastructure market size is set to be valued at USD 113.2 billion by 2027
Despite this positive outlook and the push for electrification of light and heavy-duty vehicles, what is a looming obstacle in the Electric Vehicle revolution?  The charging infrastructure required to support a full, community-wide transition to EVs is not yet available and standardization is a major challenge for the market expansion in the coming years. While EVs can be powered up at home, the industry believes that an expansive (fast) charging infrastructure is essential to expediting the uptake of EVs.  

There is also the question of where all of the additional energy needed to power this huge increase in charging capability is going to come from. Every EV model’s battery can have a different capacity and charge time. Every automaker must also interpret a set of open standards for the plug type, charging protocols and payment methods.


Solutions to all of these challenges must be found in order to achieve a full and successful transition to emobility. Change is coming fast and coming fast, and standardization committees, OEMs, CPOs, utilities, ESVEs need to be on board to effectively roll out infrastructure and remove one of the main obstacles to mainstream EV adoption.
