DAY ONE: THURSDAY, 25 FEBRUARY, 2021
9:00 – 11:00 EST
BATTERY FIRE SAFETY IN EVs KEYNOTE CASE STUDIES
PART 1: LESSONS LEARNED FROM A CHINESE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER
PART 2: LESSONS FROM A US EV MANUFACTURER
Compared to the market for ICE vehicles, barriers to the EV market are much significantly lower for Chinese EV start-ups. Given the proliferation of EV start-ups in the region, battery fire incidents have a higher frequency. In the United States, safety incidents are on the rise, with reports of fires breaking out under the vehicles backseats.
These exclusive OEM-led case study presentations will give attendees an in-depth look at the causes of battery fires and lessons that were learned after the post-incident investigations were complete.
> Was it an outlier incident?
> Was its cause related to battery cell supply chain?
> What are China’s and US’ EV battery safety standards and were they complied to in the case of the fire safety incidents?
> Did the battery management systems play any role in failing to flag up overhearing battery cells?
> What are the outcome of the post-incident investigations?
11:00 – 12:00 EST
OPTIMIZING BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS TO DETECT BATTERY MALFUNCTION
> Understand how to utilise the battery management system’s ability to alert OEMs and consumers about emerging signs of potential malfunctions in batteries
> Learn how Vehicle OEMs can leverage such an infrastructure to communicate early warning signals
> Find out how a BMS is able to monitor cell voltage, impedance and temperature to detect suspicious cells and provide early warning well before any thermal runaway takes place
Peter Miller, Chief Engineer - Batteries, Millbrook
12:00 – 1:00 EST
ENERGY DENSITY & THERMAL STABILITY OF LITHIUM-ION & SOLID STATE BATTERIES
Increasing energy density and energy storage is not only of the biggest challenges for EV right now but also the main direction of EV battery development to date, with OEMs increasingly interested in finding new solutions to improve acceleration, range, safety and durability.
> Learn what is being done by battery manufacturers to deliver energy-dense battery packs and systems that have been developed to increase energy storage, safety, efficiency and cost savings.
> Learn more about the new chemistries and materials that are increasing energy density while improving safety.
Sachin Patil, Senior Functional Safety, Nikola Motor Company
1:00 – 2:00 EST
USING DIAGNOSTICS TO PREDICT & CONTROL BATTERY SAFETY INCIDENTS
As R&D companies try to create higher energy density batteries, that have a greater susceptibility to fire incidents, existing diagnostic test and models and tests that are critical to predicting such incidents must also be improved.
> This presentation looks at ways to leverage vehicle diagnostics and implement LIB safety to meet ever-increasing energy demands.
2:00 - 3:00 EST
STRATEGIES TO MITIGATE DAMAGE TO THE BATTERY & BATTERY CELLS
> Learn how to design vehicle and battery pack structure to mitigate any damage to the battery and the cell
DAY TWO: FRIDAY 26 FEBRUARY, 2021
9:00 – 11:00 EST
BATTERY SAFETY TRAINING COURSE
BATTERY SAFETY HAZARDS, GUIDELINES, EQUIPMENT AND DESIGN
Batteries become daily use components for many applications. More than that we can say that without batteries our life will change dramatically – Just think on life with no mobile phones. In the race for energy density we sometimes forget the safety. Unfortunately we face daily safety events with injures and severe damage.
This training program focuses on portable and stationary battery safety along battery cycle life (acceptance, testing, assembly, use, transportation and disposal). The training incorporates Shmuel De-Leon and other experience on battery safety for over 25 years of work in the field. The motivation behind the training is to provide attendees with the knowledge needed to handle safely the batteries in their organization and to support reduction in safety events.
Training provides:
Full review of Root Couse for battery safety events | Guidelines on how to handle batteries safely
What to do guidelines in case of battery safety event | Check list of safety equipment needed| Fresh and updated knowledge about safety battery
Battery Safety Hazards
> Reviews all battery risks (Lead-Acid, Lithium and others…) and take an in-depth look at the causes and lessons learnt from the Boeing Dreamliner battery safety event
Battery Safety Guidelines
> Understand the main guidelines on how to work effectively with batteries and what to do when a safety event occurs
Battery Safety Equipment
> Examine the list of key safety equipment needed for working areas and battery storage warehouses
Battery Safety Design
> Understand safety design guidelines when designing a battery
EV Battery Safety
> EV Batteries differ from ordinary batteries because of their high voltage and extreme conditions to be use (Temperatures, vibration and shocks…). This final section will see a review of best practices for working safely with EV batteries
Training Course Leader: Shmuel de-leon, CEO, Shmuel De-Leon Energy Ltd.
11:00 – 12:00 EST
OPTIMIZE SUPPLY CHAINS AT EVERY LEVEL TO MITIGATE BATTERY SAFETY INCIDENTS
In sourcing EV batteries, and to avoid safety incidents, it is becomes increasingly important for OEMs to manage and track supply chains at every level. This involved everything from acquisition of battery-cell raw materials to placing quality control in production.
> Hear best practices on how to manage, track and optimize your supply chain to mitigate battery safety incidents, including safe shipment methods, packing requirements and actual logistical strategies.
12:00 – 1:00 EST
CURRENT & FUTURE SAFETY TESTING STANDARDS FOR EV BATTERIES
> Fully understand battery safety standards relating to EV battery, EVs themselves and EV buses
> Examine new standards that have the potential to open opportunities in materials for battery enclosures
> Understand whether OEMs will need to make any design changes to comply with new standards
