Chins Chinnasamy

Dr. Chins Chinnasamy is a Distinguished R&D Staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), where he leads research and development activities in advanced magnetic materials, critical materials, and manufacturing technologies. With more than 25 years of experience spanning national laboratories, industry, and academia, his expertise encompasses materials innovation, process development, technology scale-up, and commercialization across the automotive, energy, industrial, and defense sectors. His current research focuses on developing high-performance heavy rare-earth-free Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets for electric motors and other high-temperature applications through advanced alloy design, grain boundary engineering, and innovative manufacturing processes. His broader expertise includes rare-earth and rare-earth-free permanent magnets, soft magnetic materials, electrical steels, critical materials recovery and recycling, and advanced battery manufacturing technologies, with an emphasis on electrification, sustainable manufacturing, and supply-chain resilience.
