'The connected ecosystem is a fundamental building-block for building next-generation, intelligent vehicles of the future.'

The topic of connected vehicles may have been around for more than a decade but today, connected vehicles or vehicle connectivity is an entry point for several workloads and use cases including software-defined vehicles, over-the-air updates, enabling features-on-demand or cybersecurity. To keep the vehicle secure and up to date with new content and new features and generate more value for the vehicle manufacturer as well as the customer, connected vehicle is the overarching enabler.

Also, in the last twelve months, the industry has advanced to software-defined vehicles, presenting brand new challenges. This surge in interest is SDV does not mean connected vehicles stop existing. In fact, the connected ecosystem has become much more prominent as the automotive world progresses towards SDV, requiring full connectivity between the vehicle and the cloud.

In a ground-breaking update, the US Department of Commerce is taking steps towards redefining what connected vehicle means and a notice for proposed rulemaking (NPRM) will soon prohibit transactions involving connected vehicle technology manufactured by certain countries. This legislation will likely affect OEM product development pipeline and raises new concerns around compliance.

Right here right now, the end goal for OEMs is increasing profitability and value-creation, for their organizations. How are vehicle manufacturers viewing connected services from service, value and SDV perspective? What is the US OEM’s focus with respect to connected services and how have business models been created to monetize connected services and connected car data? These are just some of the questions that are top of the mind.

While the industry is working hard towards these high-growth connectivity goals, this is a long journey with many challenges and a steep learning curve for that the industry will need to go through.
