The safety of autonomous vehicles is dependent on the road surface conditions. Estimation of road surface condition using intelligent tires will aid the growth of autonomous vehicles technology and open the potential for advances new chassis control systems. In this work, the road surface algorithm developed was implemented in real-time. Five major road surfaces are classified, namely, dry asphalt, wet asphalt, concrete, snow and ice. Multiple machine learning models are compared and the algorithm has shown an accuracy of more than 80% in real-time.
