Jürg Alexander Schiffmann

Professor EPFL

After obtaining his diploma in mechanical engineering from EPFL in 1999 Dr. Schiffmann co-founded a start-up company dedicated to the design of gas-lubricated bearings. In 2005 he joined Fischer Engineering Solutions where he led the development of small scale, high-speed turbomachinery. In parallel he worked on his PhD which he obtained from EPFL in 2008. He then joined the Gas Turbine Lab at MIT as a postdoctoral associate where he worked on foil bearings. In 2013 he was nominated assistant professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

Agenda Day 2

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

2:30 PM Ultra-compact, high power density turbocompressor for air-conditioning and heating in EV and HEV

• Insights into the technology of small-scale and high-speed turbocompressor supported on
gas-lubricated bearings
• These novel machines are oil-free, silent, require no maintenance and increase the power density
by one order of magnitude
• Applications to air supply units for fuels cells and for waste heat recovery on internal
combustion engines

Check out the incredible speaker line-up to see who will be joining Jürg Alexander.
