Dr. Volker Null

Technology Manager Thermal Fluids Shell Global Solutions (Deutschland) GmbH

Volker joined Shell in 1992 with a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Stuttgart University.  In his career, he managed global technology for transformer oils, process oils and other specialty oils. After roles as group manager lubricants technology in Hamburg and as Senior Technical Advisor role for Strategic Technology he developed partnerships with key OEM as product application specialist. Since 2019 he has been managing thermal fluid technology

Agenda Day 2

Wednesday, February 12th, 2020

9:50 AM Development of next generation fluids for thermal management

• Fluids for direct cooling systems based on Shell Gas-to-Liquid (GTL) technology
• CFD Simulation under HPC conditions
• Performance of immersive cooled batteries with GTL fluids

Workshop Day

Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Progress in battery technology and the charging process plays
a crucial role in mass adoption of electric vehicles. Thermal management
of the battery is a huge factor in the aspects of life,
safety, and efficiency (influencing the range) and optimizing it
can have a big impact on the above. Modeling and simulation
are very powerful tools to optimize performance and save costs.
In this workshop the moderator will describe thermal modelling
approach for single cell and modules. This will include CFD fluid
dynamic simulations utilizing with different fluid types, indirect
and direct cooling designs at single cell and module level, and
cells with different form factor.
• Importance of detailed description of model in accurately
predicting temperature of various battery cells and modules
during different charge rates
• And module design and fluid parameters
• Thermal fluid flow in battery module and modelling distribution
of fluid flow and of temperature gradients
